PARATHEATRE WEEKEND INTENSIVE
Saturday, August 26th & Sunday August 27th
10:00am - 4:00pm both days
PerformanceWorks NW, 4625 SE 67th Ave.
Led by Ed Welsh and Bryan Smith
In this workshop, we will explore the medium of Paratheatre as developed by Antero Alli. This medium brings together methods of standing meditation, physical theatre, and vocalization for the purpose of accessing the internal landscape, the Body alive with impulse, sensation, and emotion. We engage ritual without dogma in an asocial, non-performance space.
KEY AREAS OF EXPLORATION:
Essential Paratheatre trigger methods, including No-Form, Polarity Work, and Transitory Jogs
The 5-Phase Physical Warm-Up
Verticality Ritual
Sourcing Human Systems (muscular, skeletal, CNS)
Elements Ritual
PREREQUISITES, WHAT TO EXPECT, SAFETY
PREREQUISITES
No previous dance or theatre experience required (though physical fitness, stamina, and some meditation experience can be an advantage). This work occurs in a non-performance oriented, asocial environment; please refrain from socializing as you enter the workspace and during the workshop itself. Bring a bottle of water (or tea) for hydration and a light protein-based snack to consume during a 15-minute break each day around 3pm. Wear clothes to move freely in (without corporate logos &/or images). We work in a scent-free zone; no perfumes or colognes, please.
WHAT TO EXPECT
You can expect to work. This workshop is visceral, nonverbal, and experiential; expect to move and be moved. Expect to confront self-imposed limitations, movement cliches, and other habits inhibiting spontaneous, creative response. Very little group interaction occurs during this training; the methods are practiced alone with others.
SAFETY
This work can incite catharsis and strong emotions. Participants are asked to be responsible for their own safety and well being in response to potential internal upsets and overwhelms. Making yourself safe is not taught here but explored in a trial-by-error spirit of personal experimentation. If you are unwilling to be responsible for your personal safety, you are discouraged from participating until you feel ready to do so.

About the Instructors
Ed “Gensho” Welsh has immersed himself in this Paratheatre medium since his first lab in 2016. He has participated in multiple non-performance labs facilitated by Antero and Sylvi Alli and has also been a part of several performance labs. After Paratheatrical Research productions and workshops ceased in 2019, he continued to study and practice Paratheatre methods and rituals both on his own and with others . Ed played the role of a fretful elder monk in the film THE VANISHING FIELD (by Antero Alli).
Bryan Smith has been a student of the movement of body and spirit since 2004, having trained in ritual magic, Russian Systema, Capoeira, hip-hop and contemporary dance, mask, puppetry, and physical theater. In 2017 and 2018, he participated in the Paratheatre performance labs SOROR MYSTICA, FALLEN MONSTERS, and ESCAPE FROM CHAPEL PERILOUS. Most recently, Bryan has played the role of a singularity-obsessed programmer in Antero Alli's latest film, BLUE FIRE (premiering 9/21/23).
